The special Hubbard Professional Audit lecture series is unusual, possibly unique, in that Ron Hubbard's lecture series were usually aimed at highly qualified auditors while congresses and other lecture series were given to a broad range of Scientologists and non-Scientologists. This series of lectures is aimed at people who are not auditors but are dedicated to taking training as auditors and gives them the basic data they need. Given in 1959 it gives the basics of auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) which are still applicable today. See the short excerpt at the beginning of Robin's review for what Ron says about the series. SHPA, Special Hubbard Professional Auditors Course (London).

L. Ron Hubbard gave these lectures to students of an HCA/HPAAbbreviation for Hubbard Professional Auditor. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976). course in London. The first lecture was on April 6th 1959 and the closing lecture was on May 1st 1959. Usually Ron gave two lectures per day. The whole series contains 26 tapes and was published under the title "The Skills of a Theta1. theta is thought, life force, elan vital, the spirit, the soul, or any other of the numerous definitions it has had for some thousands of years. At the end of lecture #13, Ron himself said:

"You'll graduate from this course, by the way, having had a greater coverage of Scientology than has been given in any course -- including -- for nine years."

Ron's remark (see above) about the SHPA course lectures is not at all an exaggeration. Indeed, these lecture tapes cover everything a professional auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more has to know for successful clearing. That excludes, of course, the practical part and the processes themselves. The lessons taught here very occasionally contain examples using process commands to explain general principles of auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. Dn addresses the body. Thus Dn is used to knock out and erase illnesses, unwanted sensations, misemotion, somatics, pain, etc. Dn came before Scn. Incidentally Ron conveys deep philosophical insights into the relationships between man, the universes man is concerned with and the mechanisms inside man's mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE. This is what makes those tapes valuable even for those who feel no desire to become an auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. Whatever one's attitude toward the study of these lectures, it's strongly recommended studying the tapes in the order they were given. This is because course is structured so later lessons often build on earlier ones.

A couple of scenes have changed for the better since these lectures were first given. Most likely Scientologists all over the world have incorporated Hubbard’s ideas in their professions.

Actually Ron must have already been aware of the changes in his time - he remarks: "By the way, the whole American medical profession has now accepted prenatal banks because of Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma. Beingness and Communication

"... We, in training you in Scientology as a professional, have this in constantly. Our responsibility is to make sure that we teach you those things which work and to train you in such a way as to emphasize the importances that make certain things work so that you don't ever drift off into this attitude of "Nothing will happen, it doesn't matter what I do, so I no longer have to assume any type of vigorous, definite approach to the subject."

Universes

"You'll find in the Axioms a list of that more or less have to be made in order to keep a that way. And the Axioms are simply the rules of the universe of the that makes it a ."

"You just remember that if he made the postulate, he made it according to certain rules and it comes apart according to certain rules and those rules are found in the Axioms."

"Now, what's the third universe? The second universe is the . Now, what's this third universe? Well, it's actually really a sort of a subdivision, a sort of a Q and A, rather than a real universe and you could argue about this. But to most people it is a universe, so we include it in it. And we include a body."

"A body is apparently a universe. And it - a body plus its immediate possessions - is just about as much universe as lots of people have. They've completely lost the second universe; they have no awareness at all of the first universe and this leaves them with a body."

"A birth is not the source of a body, nor is sex the source of a body. It's merely the mechanics by which a body arrives. And I don't know that one can't just appear - unless somebody has made up a whole set of rules by which it must appear."

"Well, the rules by which it must appear are, more or less, the rules by which this universe lives. The rules by which a body must appear and the rules by which it must continue and the rules by which it must die are all a special set of rules."

"Now, the tremendously influences the body - tremendously. Because the is a created thing, the body is a created thing; but the body is a sort of a calling card. The does not give you, at once, the individual's identity but the body does. That's his identity. And that's about what a body is."

The Dynamics

A lecture given on 7 April 1959

"... let's take a look at these things called "." Well, if you look them over you will find out that the , as listed, give you subdivisions of functions and actions, rather than things.So you'll just have to get used to the idea of the things - the targets - are four universes. And these are urges or impulses. They are actions, urges, impulses which could be native to anything."

"You'll find in old Indian books - it said, "Things got very bad. The whole race went into a decline. Everything was upset. Man, in effect, had gone to hell. He had begun to eat. It was so bad that he even ate other animals."

"Well, that to us today is almost a novel look. But if you look at it you'll find that - in general, that fifth is to a large degree a consumption thing now. Man is very interested in consuming the fifth so that he can go on surviving, which is about the silliest thing you've ever wanted to see."

The last third is quite interesting stuff about the inversions on the dynamicsthere could be said to be eight urges (drives, impulses) in life. These we call dynamics. These are motives or motivations. We call them the eight dynamics. The first dynamic -is the urge toward existence as one’s self. Here we have individuality expressed fully. This can be called the self dynamic...more and the downward spiral.

Scales

A lecture given on 8 April 1959

This consists of the concept of simply "standing one's ground" in order to resolve another's effect. This is a sensible, realistic alternative and can be done by either a) out-creating an opponent with a bigger effect of one's own creation (and later perhaps suffering from guilt) or b) putting up a complementary postulate to the opponent .

But there is still a much higher concept for resolving a problema problem is postulate-counter-postulate, terminal-counter-terminal, force-counter-force. It’s one thing versus another thing. You’ve got two forces or two ideas which are interlocked of comparable magnitude and the thing stops right there. All right, now with these two things one stuck against the other you get a sort of a timelessness, it floats in time. (SH Spec 82, 6111C21) 2 . a problem is a postulate-counter-postulate resulting in indecision. That is the first manifestation of problems, and the first consequence of a problem is indecision. (SH Spec 27, 6107C11) 3 . a multiple confusion. (SH Spec 26X, 6107C03) 4 . an intention counter-intention that worries the preclear. (HCOB 23 Feb 61) 5 . a problem is the conflict arising from two opposing intentions. A present time problem is one that exists in present time, in a real universe. (HCOB 3 Jul 59) 6 . something which is persisting, the as-is-ness of which cannot be attained easily. (PRO 16, 5408CM20) or conflict: the ability of a being to exert pan-determinism. Something Ron goes in depth in one of the following lectures.

"A wonderful exercise is take the Chart of Human Evaluation out into the society, call on a , call on a greengrocer, talk to a policeman, stop a casual pedestrian. Listen to the and look at them on the Tone Scale; see about where they are. You won't have to examine their past, present and future life to know what they're doing, what they think, what they react to, what they like, what would be their solution to any given ."

"And we into another scale and that is called the Effect Scale. Now, the Effect Scale is about the briefest scale there is. Now, although I've just gone over the scale, don't you go forgetting it. And in Science of Survival there's that Chart of Human Evaluation. And the use of that scale directly in processing is with a modern process. If the worst you have doesn't rise one tone level totally in ten days of , boy, are you losing.

A good will raise one tone level on the Chart of Human Evaluation in about one or two days of - the whole behavior of the pc. You understand? They're very important. That's how you evaluate success - the emotional tones and changes. And they change in just that order, not some other order.

All right, so let's get on to this Effect Scale. This is a way of gauging the scale - it's gauging the pc and measuring how much effect you're having on the pc. But when you start to measure how much effect you have on the pc let's not you make the mistake of you yourself being upside down on the Effect Scale. The only people who never produce any results in are haywire, upset, all out of gear, mishmashed on the Effect Scale.

What is the Effect Scale? Very handy scale. At the top of the scale, the individual can receive or give, or not receive or not give an effect, at will. So it's an effect. Now, as we go down scale, the individual becomes more and more anxious about producing an effect, and more and more leery of receiving one."

Further. Ron talks about a scale of difficulties to be resolved in processing. The last difficulty to surrender is communication1. the consideration and action of impelling an impulse or particle from source point across a distance to receipt point with the intention of bringing into being at the receipt point a duplication and understanding of that which emanated from the source point. (HCOB 5 Apr 73)...more difficulties, followed by form, which is next most difficult. Next to that is germs. Constant conditions are even easier to resolve (e.g. with an Locational Process). Chronic difficulties rank amongst the easier targets. Aches and pains are the easiest targets.

"All right. Nevertheless, that has to be - because it is and because it can be created in a finite number of hours - is the first grade of . This state can be obtained. E-Meters don't work on them until they key themselves back in again with and so forth. And they measure up in various ways. Their intelligence is terrific. Now, these, by the way, are fairly terrific people. They do all right. I'm not downgrading the people who reach this state. I'm just showing you it's not stable."

A process:

"Get the idea of mocking up some money. Now get the idea that would spoil the game and don't do it."

"All right. Get the idea of mocking up a picture as large as that wall and as brilliant as present time. You got that idea? Good. Now get the idea it'd spoil the game if you did it, and don't do it."

a) how and what the meter2. Hubbard Electrometer. An electronic instrument for measuring mental state and change of state in individuals, as an aid to precision and speed in auditing. The E-meter is not intended or effective for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of any disease. (Scn AD)...more registers,
b) the fact that mental mass, energy, space and time is the same as physical universe MEST1. a coined word, meaning matter, energy, space and time, the physical universe. All physical phenomena may be considered as energy operating in space and time. The movement of matter or energy in time is the measure of space. All things are mest except theta. Postulates, circuits and misownership are added. Ron is in his element and crystal clear. Pieces come together. One gets a glimpse at the big picture – not that you can as-is the mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. Hypnotism and irresponsibility explained.

The differences and definitions of lock, dub-in, mock-up, secondary and engram1. a mental image picture which is a recording of a time of physical pain and unconsciousness. This differs from other mental pictures because it contains, as part of its content, unconsciousness and physical pain. "You can put a person's time track back together again, that has become scrambled, and you can do a tremendous amount for him. You could just sit there with an E-Meter, take experiences that he can see - you know, in terms of locks, secondaries, engrams - and just find each one in time for him. And gradually get his time track lined up and he would be in much better shape. That all by itself."

The Code of a Scientologist

"How to get along with a " is the way you could say the Auditor's Code reads but how to get along with the public is the subtitle of the Scientologist's Code. And these are two codes on two different . It's very important that you recognize that they have the same basic rationale on both . This is how to get results on a pc - the Scientologist's Code is actually, to a marked degree, how to get results on the public. It's very fascinating that very few people have ever understood that are basically merely good sense.

Another of Ron's jokes to begin the lecture:

"I asked old-time Scientologist one time a cracker. I asked him, "Do you locate your firmly in space or time, or are your not located in space or time? Now, which do you do?" And he told me the next year that..." (laughter)

Ron tells a story about how he had died in a previous life and what it was like being a ghost and explains the mechanisms involved with forgettingness, etc.
Actually this lecture is not just on Axioms but - more basic - on postulates2. a postulate is, of course, that thing which is a directed desire or order, or inhibition, or enforcement, on the part of the individual in the form of an idea. This lecture is not about the various auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) styles or grades known in Scientology. It is rather about the two basic kinds of therapies. An evil, destructive "black" one and the good, pro-survival, "white" kind of practice. Ron explains how this split came about.

Note: The principles of this material are applicable to other areas than therapy.

"Now, the only way Scientology will ever go off the rails and be used for bad purposes is by failing consistently and continually, by having bits and pieces of it forgotten, being dropped away from this and that and the other thing to merely a form preserved and no understanding of it preserved at all. In other words, if people can no longer produce a result with it, they get down into a despair category, "Well, it doesn't matter what you do." And after that , it's just, 'Well, let's just destroy everything and everybody.' You see, 'We can't do anything and so let's destroy everybody.' "

Types of Cases

Here we get deeper insight into how various other practices tried to resolve the matter of e.g. insanity. It is with the application of shock which pushes a patient even lower on the ARC1. a word from the initial letters of Affinity, Reality, Communication which together equate to Understanding. It is pronounced by stating its letters, A-R- C. To Scientologists it has come to mean good feeling, love or friendliness, such as “He was in ARC with his friend.” One does not, however, fall out of ARC, he has an ARC break. (LRH Def. Notes)...more scale than the point of his insanity, namely below sensation. Without sensing anything he appears to be more mentally healthy. That's an appearance only. If one can follows the deep logic Ron applies here, one gets a good hold on whyThat basic outness found which will lead to a recovery of stats. "Types of cases then boil down to just this: is the degree of reality the individual is capable of attaining. That's about all you can say about a - just to be a blunt package statement - to give reality he's capable of attaining. Individual who is terrifically high on the scale is very frightening to have around for an entirely different reason. That's up in the middle ranges. His self-determinism permits him to create for himself almost any kind of an atmosphere or reality he cares to have. You know? He says, "Well, I feel gloomy today," and he feels gloomy. That's it. Or he says, "Well, isn't it a lovely day and I feel happy." It's a lovely day and he's happy. It's as - almost as simple as that, you see. He creates his own environment, you might say. He might have contests against the creation of his own environment and so forth, but he's always making it one way or the other."

"And it's very weird that people in general are so reverted or obverted or something of the sort that they fear wrong way to. They think the quiet person who doesn't give any trouble, he's the nice one to have around. Yet he's the one who always sets the house on fire - if we've got to have people always setting houses on fire. And they say the person at the top of the scale who's just dreaming it all up in all directions and so on, he's really dangerous to have around. Well, this is not true. It's an exact reverse look."

"As far as types are concerned, there is just one type. And that is a going down scale into a gradient scale of advanced difficulties with , reality and . And out of this gradient scale we get an apparency of many types. But when we add particular engrams making people in particular ways, then we get an enormous new number of - apparent types. And then it flies out the window if we don't know anything about it at all. There's apparently one type per person and we - that's it."

"This is something to remember when you're looking at somebody. Affinity, reality, - these factors established will give you entrance to the , will let you classify the , will let you predict the and let you straighten it out. Unless you yourself are too greatly at war with his reality to recognize that that is his reality, you will succeed every time with such cases and they won't fool you and up a bunch of failures on you."

"To acquire the trick of being able to observe a reality that is not your reality and merely observe it as that reality and then take the proper amount of responsibility to adjust it, is a very interesting discipline, and one that a lot of auditors fall from grace on."

1: You've got to look at the person's reality, observe it, see it for what it is. That is his reality, you see.

"Well, what about this. Assessment. We're looking, basically, for bad cause, which means cause calculated to undermine the self-determinism, independence, good health and continued survival of the pc. That's what we're looking for. We're looking for bad cause."

"Now, you can understand a lot about cases, understand a tremendous amount about cases, if you understand that the mechanism of self-invalidation is mixed up with every computation. Because the bad cause valence which is dominant on the is seeking to make nothing out of the individual - the , you see. But the is actually fighting for some type of determinism or control over a bad cause factor. And you've got a fight consisting of at least two terminals, one synthetic and one live - the 's alive, the other's synthetic. It's being created by the , yet he doesn't know he's creating it."

"What is, basically, the reactive ? The reactive is the other-determinism which has overwhelmed the . That's all the reactive is. That's a very fast statement but a very accurate one."

Such a mechanism of saying, 'Well, past lives don't exist.' It's just another mechanism of disowning a time track. And you get - you get these complex views. But this must never disturb your definition of a time track because the time track we're defining has not ceased to exist! Quite interesting, but that time track has not ceased to exist just because he's taking up other mechanisms to defeat it. He's still got this time track. It's still there. I'm afraid he never wins in getting rid of one. And the only way basically they can ever get clear of a time track, is to confront it and experience it. If he's unwilling to confront it and experience it, all other mechanisms are not-is mechanisms. He's trying to not-is this track, and he has all sorts of weird ways of doing it - and they are the ways of the Reality Scale, of course."

"You could walk through an insane asylum and stop every patient you met in the corridors, and say to them -just look at them, say, "Come up to present time." "Thank you." And go to the next one that you meet, "Come up to present time." "Thank you." Just go through the whole place like that. You know, you would have taken a certain percentage of cases into total - from total insanity to sanity. And they would be quite miraculous and nobody would be able to understand this great magic that you had exerted, if they didn't know about time tracks."

Now, that takes into account only this - that you are running a decent standard process. And if a decent standard process, such as the processes which you are learning in this course, turns something on, the process will turn it off."

"Scientology is just a little bit larger than life. That's always something to remember. You're always just a little bit larger than life when you're handling life. About the only thing that can shoot a pc down on a graph is bad . You can actually reduce a pc on the graph with bad . Life might take two or three more lifetimes to shove him down on the graph, but you, in two or three hours of bad , can shove him down."

"Of course, the answer to any question is the question, according to the formula, which is where your Q and A comes from. Somebody says, "How are you?" The exact answer to the question is "How are you?" according to the formula - duplication. People aren't very satisfied with it because it crunches their social machinery."

Theory of Processes

"The main thing - the main thing that you should know about processes is that they won't do anything for anybody anyplace. That's the first thing you should know about them. You can write one down in a book and you can put the book on the 's chair and you can go away and you can come back hours later and nothing has happened."

"Now, what does do something? All the process is, is the postulate on which a series of errors have accumulated, which postulate has become an effect-point in the pc rather than a cause point. And all the process does is reverse effect-point to cause-point."

"Now, let's look at this in terms of determinisms. The postulate is no longer self-determined in the pc but is other-determined in the pc. You got the idea? Now all you have to do, then, is reverse effect to cause or - which is the same way of saying it - other-determinism to self-determinism. And that is what a process is. It, however, is simply a thought; it is inactive, it is inert."

"Because in the normal course of cause and effect, in the normal course of trying to stay self-determined amongst a million other-determinisms, the individual, no matter what he tried to do anywhere, would eventually have gotten pretty lost. It was pretty inevitable that he got lost. It isn't - we can say, "Well, it's his fault," or "It's other people's fault," and so on. Well, it's nobody's fault. It's a universe."

"Now reverse-wise you wouldn't even use a word to describe the isness of a wall. And it's rather wonderful that in Scientology we can describe things which can't be described. "Now, because you make him touch it, you are putting him on a little bit of a via, true, because it's you that's making him touch it. But you're putting him into position of being cause toward it. The process, the commands of 8-C, and so forth, would not work at all if it weren't for just what I told you about and if it weren't for the fact that you were making him touch the wall and that doingness had been added to the actual theory."

"So, a process does these two things: increases his familiarity and puts him at cause. A process which doesn't do those two things is worthless, useless, and actually should be discouraged by you."

"Now, this is quite interesting - quite interesting to look over processing and recognize that it's based, first and foremost, on a postulate - the reversal of the postulate. You see, the person's got the postulate, is the total effect of the postulate and isn't familiar with it, doesn't even know he's got this postulate, you see? So you just increase his familiarity with it which you can do in a lecture. And sometimes a person listening to a lecture all of a sudden gets a tremendous . You know. Bing! You know. Wow! You know. Bang! Well, he's just been submerged below a recognition of something, you see? And he comes suddenly into a recognition of the thing. Well, he's already started on his ."

"Now, the next thing is the individual in his ability to confront the isness of something, you might say, or conceive the isness of something, gets more and more at cause-point over it and so his responsibility picks up and he eventually comes up into responsibility for creation of it. Now, that doesn't matter whether it's a wall or a thought or an idea. It doesn't matter what it is but he recognizes creation of it. And this is - this is quite normally covered by a very sloppy word: ."

"And this is the basic lie that gets him into trouble. That is the lie that gets him into trouble right across the boards. He wasn't willing to have it happen so he says he had no part in it. And the only answer to that is he must be the effect of all of it - if he couldn't have caused any of it. Well, he was part of it, wasn't he? Well, that's obvious. He's demonstrating it with a broken leg and the little child is demonstrating it with a child's body and the psycho is demonstrating it by being in a spinbin. And this is demonstrated conclusively that he's part of this. But if he says, "Under no circumstances was I causative in this," he is saying, "I'm not willing to have had any of this occur", he then only leaves one door open, and that's effect. Because it's a two-pole universe. If you're not cause you're an effect. That's it. It's as simple as that."

"Now, an individual who is at pan-determinism would see clearly where he was at cause and where he was at effect. He would see this very clearly. But as we go on down the , we find there's only one point of the cause-distance-effect , only one point of it that has to be stressed, and that's cause. The pc must be placed at cause because that's one place he won't go. He'll go to effect."

"Now, as you look this over in an session, the more the pc is obsessively being an effect and the less willing he is to be cause, the more difficult his will be. Now, that is how you assess a difficult . That is how you assess one. You find out - one of the first things that you want to know is what's this individual willing to cause? What is he willing to have had, you see, and cause? What causative point was he willing to occupy?"

But let's look at him actually. How many hours of sleep does he need? How often does he have to eat in order to keep going? What is his commonest response of protest? There's a nice index of Tone Scale, isn't it? He cries. Well, a lot of children are too far down scale to cry. A child that cries easily is in pretty good shape."

Electronic Phenomena of the Mind

"When we say electronic, everybody winces. They think we're talking about electronics or electronics people. We're not talking about electronics people. We're talking about the bits and things that go through the air before a person's field of vision when he's got his eyes closed or the zits and zats and zrups that hit the body, the steady pressures that smash down somebody's chest, the-all sorts of odd phenomena that has to do with little electrical shocks that a person gets, the ringing, singing sensations that they get in their ears, pressures they get against their faces, inside their skulls and oddities of masses that they seem to detect. And how they draw a curtain in front of their faces so they can't see their and all of that sort of thing. Got the idea? Now, that's what we're talking about."

"Now, basically, what are we talking about when we're talking about a mental image picture? At first, it is in the terms of an electronic mass of some sort. That's usually in those terms. It's made out of some sort of standing waves or electrical energy or projection. There's a lot of electronic phenomena connected with just seeing a mental image picture."

"You start having a fellow mock up masses and push them into the body, mock up masses and push them into the body, then hold them in, you know, and keep them mocked up, mock up masses and push them into the body-just your E-Meter. Your E-Meter needle will start doing things. Well, it just has to do with the density and resistance of this particular mass - electronic phenomena. More important to you is the behavior of the pc under the influence of these things."

"An individual or a Scientology organization today exists in a society which has an economic and social set of bar of barriers which are very difficult to violate. An would love to just go on people and group people and forget about the money and all that sort of thing. Next thing you know, , he's disobeyed the channels of the society and he isn't anybody. He's having great difficulties. We have environmental impositions and that sort of thing and they tend to keep the information penned up to some degree. But as we break these things down, as the information flows more broadly and it flows better, it's more intelligible, it's more effective, we find ourselves in the favored position of never having imposed a great secrecy of any kind on this particular body of knowledge."

"Now a Clear - a Clear can be made and with additional processing and so on, can be stabilized and kept stable - many Clears. This has been terrifically successful, but was not more than a recovery point. 1957, December was the recovery point for 1947 and 1950. That was-it was no more than that.
