Text in bold and italic, like this, is notes to people working on this draft, and will be taken out before publication.
This item is to go on the following item [[1]] just after the introduction (that is to say before the item First Happiness Rundown).
I, Ant, I am doubtful about finding a good heading for this area.

Subject: Re: Request: any information about The Way to Happiness?
Hi Ant,
I might be of some help.
When LRHL. Ron Hubbard wrote The Way to Happiness he was in hiding with Pat and Annie Broker, so I was not there. But what I do remember is that when the book was received, the LRHL. Ron Hubbard PRAbbreviation for public relations. The art of making good works well known. (HCO PL 21 Nov 72 I)
had to get it published and do up a campaign around it and the Snr CSAbbreviation for 1. Case Supervisor. 2. Commodore's Staff. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976).
Int Office had to work out the rundown of processes. This is what RTRC (LRHL. Ron Hubbard Tech and Research Compilations) would do. They would take everything LRHL. Ron Hubbard had written or spoken about a subject and put the processes together and write it up in bulletin form under the name of LRHL. Ron Hubbard.
Based on the year TWTH came out, the rundown would have been compiled by David and Merrill Mayo, Julie Gillespie-Mayo and perhaps Penny Eldredge.
Hope this helps.
Janis

Hi, Ant,
Dan's right, I was up to my ears in the HRD evolution - as a trainee at ASHOAbbreviation for American Saint Hill Organization. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976).
when it first came out in '81 (under David Mayo's supervision) and then in Senior C/S2. the C/S is the case supervisor. He has to be an accomplished and properly certified auditor and a person trained additionally to supervise cases...MORE
Int's office in '82-83. In fact, I was the one who did the whole revision cycle and submitted it to Ray Mithoff and LRHL. Ron Hubbard for approval.
Here's a fast summary of what went on, as I recall it.
1. LRHL. Ron Hubbard did write TWTH. As far as I know, he wrote it entirely on his own, in late 80 and maybe early 81. I know (from despatches to Snr C/S2. the C/S is the case supervisor. He has to be an accomplished and properly certified auditor and a person trained additionally to supervise cases...MORE
Int in 82/83) that he was proud of it, and considered it one of his most important legacies.
2. The HRD was put together by Mayo and Murray [Melanie Seidler Murray][1]., based heavily on Ron's notes and instructions, also in late 80 and early 81. In other words, Mayo and Murray did not make this stuff up, or grossly violate basic techAbbreviation for technology. The methods of application of an art or science as opposed to mere knowledge of the science or art itself. (HCOB 13 Sep 65)
with it.
3. A big training and export evolution was done at ASHOAbbreviation for American Saint Hill Organization. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976).
in spring - summer 81. The idea was to haul in an auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more

from as many orgs as possible, train and intern them on delivering the rundown, and send them back to their orgs to deliver tons of it. Mayo was there at the start of the evolution. I arrived (from Phoenix Org, where I was the Snr C/S2. the C/S is the case supervisor. He has to be an accomplished and properly certified auditor and a person trained additionally to supervise cases...MORE
at the time) shortly after Mayo left - but the evolution was still in full swing, and David came by to check up on progress a time or two. I never saw Melanie, though I believe she took part in setting up and starting the training program.
4. HRD was marketed and pushed heavily, mid-81 and into 82.
5. Mayo was removed from postA position from which a terminal operates in an org, where one knows that somebody is at. (FO 2200)
in late August/early Sept 82. Ray went on postA position from which a terminal operates in an org, where one knows that somebody is at. (FO 2200)

person added to his new office, Sept 82. One of the earliest projects I was given was overhaul of the HRD (Ron had asked Ray to get this done, and Ray assigned it to me). Over the next several months (into the summer of 83? - I don't recall exactly) the HCOBs for the rundown were all revised, and the "new" rundown was piloted to ensure it worked. It did work, and the revised rundown was submitted to LRHL. Ron Hubbard for approval, along with a program to implement it internationally. LRHL. Ron Hubbard approved the issues and program, and the rundown was "re-released." It continued to be delivered, but never had the same popularity (or marketing attention) as when it first came out.
Opinion: First the rundown was "tainted" - in the eyes of public and staff - by association with Mayo, who had been thoroughly, loudly discredited and disgraced. When it came out in its revised "purified" form, it was viewed with suspicion by some, because it came from LRHL. Ron Hubbard Tech Research and Compilations, not directly from LRHL. Ron Hubbard (and anything not 1000% Ron was not fully trusted). Finally, it was almost completely eclipsed by the Next Big Thing, which I believe was FPRD.
Anyway, since it was no longer pushed and wasn't a mandatory Grade Chart step, it faded into obscurity. By the time I went on postA position from which a terminal operates in an org, where one knows that somebody is at. (FO 2200)
as Services Exec Int many years later (mid-95), there was zero management attention on it. It was all sec checking and FPRD, all the time (except for the big-money services at AOs and - OMG - Flag and Freewinds). I did receive a number of letters and reports from some techAbbreviation for technology. The methods of application of an art or science as opposed to mere knowledge of the science or art itself. (HCOB 13 Sep 65)
terminals here and there, saying they were still delivering it with great results and wondering whyThat basic outness found which will lead to a recovery of stats. (HCO PL 13 Oct 70 II)
it wasn't being promoted.
One more chunk of opinion: The original rundown worked very well. There was nothing seriously wrong with its issues or the action itself. The revised version did not include any fundamental or drastic changes from the original, at least not that I can recall. It could have been left just as it was in the first place, and staff and public would have been ... well, happy. Happier, in fact. The whole cycle was driven by someone's (largely false) demonizations of Mayo, his staff, and everything they had touched - not by any actual "perversions" of LRHL. Ron Hubbard's techAbbreviation for technology. The methods of application of an art or science as opposed to mere knowledge of the science or art itself. (HCOB 13 Sep 65)
for the rundown.
I hope that's of some use to you. Again (and in the interest of the precept "Seek to live with the truth") it is just what I recall of events that took place 30+ years ago. It includes opinions, and some of the data is probably a bit off (though not intentionally so). Unfortunately, aside from Dan [Koon], I don't know anyone else to refer you to for more about the whole thing. Maybe if you could reach Melanie or David, they'd probably have some useful input. (If you do, please tell them I said hello!)
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to write. When I have a bit more time free, I'll check out the links you provided. If they spark any new thoughts or recollections, I'll let you know.
Kind regards, and good luck in what you're doing.

[In a later email Russell adds:] You're right, the revised bulletins are not enormously different from the originals. The big casethe whole sum of past by-passed charge. (HCOB 19 Aug 63)
histories issue was dropped because it was considered (a) not really necessary (b) not asked for or approved by Ron, and (c) liable to be full of outpoints and "twists," put there by the "suppressive" Mayo and Murray.
