Early life

Perry was born February 6, 1925 in Saint Paul Minnesota to Anthony Louis Fabio and Beatrice Etta (née Perry). At the age of six his father was killed. Perry's mother later remarried George Herbert Chapdelaine, a horologist (watchmaker) and engraver. After adoption by his step-father, Perry's last name became Chapdelaine, the only child of George and Beatrice Chapdelaine. Perry graduated from Mason City Iowa High School, he then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa) where he graduated in 1947 with a B.A. in Mathematics, and minors in chemistry, physics, and psychology. Perry furthered his education by attending George Peabody College for Teachers (now a part of Vanderbilt University. While there, as a graduate student, Perry met and fell in love with Ruby, an assistant librarian working at the College. In 1949 Perry obtained his M.A. in Mathematics, with a minor in psychology.

Perry returned to Mason City where he taught mathematics at his Alma mater, the Iowa State Teachers College. In 1949 Perry and Ruby were married in Mason City, where Perry then taught at Mason City Junior high School. On February 23, 1950, Perry and Ruby welcomed their first child, Perry Anthony Chapdelaine Jr.

Involvement with Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma. The mental image pictures are believed on the basis of personal revelation to be comprising mental activity created and formed by the spirit, and not by the body or brain. (BPL 24 Sept 73 V) 2. Dn addresses the body. Thus Dn is used to knock out and erase illnesses, unwanted sensations, misemotion, somatics, pain, etc. Dn came before Scn. It disposed of body illness and the difficulties a thetan was having with his body. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more

In the December, 1949, edition of Astounding Science Fiction editor John W. Campbell announced an upcoming article about Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard. Perry was an avid reader of the magazine and had followed with interest the build up to the first article about Dianetics1. It disposed of body illness and the difficulties a thetan was having with his body. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more in the May, 1950, issue of Astounding Science Fiction. That article was titled Dianetics1. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more, the Evolution of a Science. Perry decided this was important to him and made plans to take the HDA (Hubbard Dianetic Auditor) course that was being offered in Elizabeth New Jersey.

His first action was to move his family to his wife's parents home in Mobile Alabama, a drive of over 1,051 miles in his Frazer Manhattan automobile. He then drove to Elizabeth, a journey of over 1,178 miles, where he started the six week HDA course. In order to pay for everything Perry sold his life insurance policy, which his parents had paid into for years. His course took place at the original Hubbard Research FoundationAn evening, part-time organization. It's hours are 6:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M., Monday through Friday and 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976) which had been established by L. Ron Hubbard, Don Rogers (an electrical engineer), John W. Campbell, Jr., and others.

During this time Hubbard was primarily in Los Angeles California but would, once a week, fly in and give lectures to the approximately forty students on the course. Of that time Perry recalls - "One time he had worked out this business about ARC1. a word from the initial letters of Affinity, Reality, Communication which together equate to Understanding. It is pronounced by stating its letters, A-R- C. To Scientologists it has come to mean good feeling, love or friendliness, such as “He was in ARC with his friend.” One does not, however, fall out of ARC, he has an ARC break. (LRH Def. Notes)...more. We, the class auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more’s, didn’t want to hear about that, we wanted to hear about how to yank out engrams". John Campbell would also lecture during this time period.

career

Perry came to Nashville, TN to teach mathematics. He taught simultaneously at University of TN night school and Tennessee State University; respectively all White and all Black. He was the first and only “integrated” professor at both schools and, during the race fights to control the schools, the two college presidents obeyed the judge, who’d told them to cooperate, by simultaneously firing their only integrated faculty member. He also was honored with having a half-million-dollar National Science FoundationAn evening, part-time organization. It's hours are 6:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M., Monday through Friday and 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976) grant for early development of Computer Assisted Instruction in conjunction with the work of the famous Dr. Patrick Suppes at Stanford University.

What to Audit/A History of Man

"The book reportedly originated in Scientology auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) sessions held in Wichita, Kansas in early 1952, involving Hubbard and his personal auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more, Perry Chapdelaine. According to Chapdelaine, Hubbard would "settle himself on a couch with a tape recorder handy and an 'auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more' who would be expected to provide appropriate feedback. In no time a flow1. an impulse or direction of energy particles or thought or masses between terminals. (HCOB 3 Feb 69)...more of introspection - like the free association characteristic of a psychoanalytic session - would begin."[1]
"Taping by Hubbard was primarily for his work such as axioms and postulates2. a postulate is, of course, that thing which is a directed desire or order, or inhibition, or enforcement, on the part of the individual in the form of an idea. (2ACC 23A, 5312CM14) 3. that self-determined thought which starts, stops or changes past, present or future efforts. (APIA, p. 33) 4. is actually a prediction. (5112CM30B)-v...MORE, not for sessions. The History of Man came out of my one-time session with Hubbard."[2]

Perry Chapdelaine, Sr. writes for the Arthritis Trust of America under the pseudonym of Anthony di Fabio. Chapdelaine/di Fabio has both a BA and MA in mathematics with minors in chemistry, physics and psychology. He taught mathematics at college level for a number of years, and he's proudly worked for the Air Force as a civilian. Later he established a number of private businesses, but is now retired, except for his work for a charity organization. His early and long-running love of science fiction and fantasy started him on the path of writing science fiction full time until he developed so-called "incurable" rheumatoid arthritis. While seeking and at last finding the cure to this horrible disease, he began work for the non-private, tax-exempt charity, the Arthritis Trust of America. It is for the Arthritis Trust that he's written a number of medical books and articles dedicated to helping folks, all under his pseudonym of "Anthony di Fabio." Found on Kindle are the following:

Just Science Fiction?

ASF May 1950.jpg

Perry, a local acquaintance of mine, recently gave me a copy of a 100+-page piece he'd written in 2012, entitled "Introduction to the First Publicly Known Clear3. a Clear is not an all-knowing being. A Clear is somebody who has lost the mass, energy, space and time connected with the thing called mind . ( SH Spec 80, 6609C08) ...more." The following excerpt is taken from the first page,[3] and it explains the importance of LRHL. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics1. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more, The Modern Science of Mental Health having been first publicized in a science fiction magazine, of all places.

"L. Ron Hubbard's Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more, The Modern Science of Mental Health made quite a stir throughout the world when it was published in 1950. Psychiatry was a failed profession in those days -- and pretty much still is. Hubbard's Dianetics1. "Original publicity of Hubbard's book was reached through the pages of a science fiction magazine through the acceptance by John W. Campbell, Jr., the editor of Astounding Science Fiction. Since those days, science fiction and fantasy have become mature fields of literature, not to be disparaged as it was so easy for some to do in those days. However, the important aspect of being published in Astounding Science Fiction was that its readership was far from that of gullible teenagers. Scientists, teachers, engineers, lawyers of every rank subscribed, and often corresponded regularly with John W. Campbell, Jr. Campbell greatly influenced scientists, engineers and writers. His magazine's subscribers included Albert Einstein (general and special Theories of relativity ; E=MC2), Edward Teller (father of the hydrogen bomb), and Werner von Braun (developer of Germany's and America's first successful rockets). According to Herman Oberth (early rocket scientist), the Rand Think Tank (Rand Corporation), employed by military and other government experts, was also the fruit of Campbell's thoughts.

"Scientists and engineers thought so highly of him that there is a crater on Mars named after him, the Campbell crater!

L Ron Hubbard(l) and John W Campbell

"The magazine Campbell edited became the cerebral playground for engineers, physicists and philosophers and was consistently widely distributed throughout colleges and universities.

"The multi-billion-dollar science fiction and fantasy movie and TV industry owes major debts to Campbell, who brought mood and magic into these fields.

"As editor of a magazine dedicated to science fiction and science fact articles, Analog Science Fiction and Fact (initially Astounding Science Fiction), he molded and shaped the modern world of science fiction by training several generations of great writers -- Professor Isaac Asimov, PhD (biochemistry); L. Sprague DeCamp, B.S., M.S. (aeronautical engineering), whose oxygen-system designs were incorporated into astronauts' moon suits; Sir Arthur C. Clarke (former President of Sri Lanka University), inventor of the asynchronous equidistant satellites; and so on. Campbell also published and recognized the genius of others: L. Ron Hubbard, A.E. van Vogt, Lester del Rey, Robert Heinlein, Hamilton, Pratt, and on ... all the men who created the Golden Age of Science Fiction.

"Gene Roddenberry, a fan of Campbell's and the developer of Star Trek and Star Trek Generations, was profoundly influenced by Campbell. Star Wars and its series, and dozens of other popular, economically lucrative movies follow formats and principles first espoused and placed into print by John W. Campbell, Jr.

"One of the very few science fiction writers not trained by Campbell was Ron Hubbard, a wizard of a genius in his own right -- eagle scout, explorer, aviator, world traveler, and writer of western tales, true adventures ... oh, yes! According to Campbell, Hubbard could also carry a tune in any part of four harmonies!

"Campbell collected geniuses, frequently holding talk fests at his New Jersey home. Among those invited to share in this literal buffet of creative ideas was L. Ron Hubbard, and so John W. Campbell, Jr. and L. Ron Hubbard became fast friends.

"During the forties and later, L. Ron Hubbard wrote some of the definitive fantasy and science fiction stories, many published in either Astounding Science Fiction or Unknown magazine, the latter [being] a short-lived Campbellian publication dedicated to the telling of fairy tales in a modern vein. L. Ron Hubbard was superb in Astounding, but in Unknown, he excelled.

"Single-handedly, Campbell created modern science fiction as a vehicle for a new way of thinking! He is considered by many to have had the most challenging mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE and the most constructive influence on the United States from the 1930s up to the end of the 1960s.

"Looking back on the true influence of Astounding Science Fiction magazine, only now can we begin to realize the huge influence Campbell had on promulgating Hubbard's Dianetics1. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more! Furthermore, this was not simply a public relationsThe art of making good works well known. (HCO PL 21 Nov 72 I) ''Abbr.'' PR stunt, because John W. Campbell and his wife, Margaret, practiced the principles of Dianetics1. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more until each passed on.

"The above brief description of John W. Campbell, Jr. should set to rest the idea that "Dianetics1. (HCOB 22 Apr 69)...more was promulgated in just a science fiction pulp magazine!" Yes ... but a magazine with tremendous reach and influence! As fact, the book Dianetics1.
