It seems many critics and exscientologists ignore the zeitgeist or matrix that the Church existed in back in the '50's, 60's and '70's.
A time when a cross dressing Hoover who used hang out with Mob celebrities (because according to him the Mafia didn't exist which didn't stop CIA from working with them in a plan to assassinate Castro but that's another story) at Del Mar with his constant companion Tolson was the Director of the FBI was miffed by a few critical comments our man Hubbard made at a congress in Washington DC and a time when way back in 1951 Ron blew-v. ''Slang'' unauthorized departure from an area. (HCOB 19 Jun 71 II)

Not to mention the "Infernal Ravening Service" as he called them who had the arrogance to place themselves above God in determining what was and what was not a religion or the Fascist Drug Administration who had recently in true Nazi style burned all of Wilhelm Reich's books on Orgone theory and in '63 basically arrested a personified religious artifact placed on the warrant as "Mr. E Meter".
Never mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE
the AMA who was running a protection racket for their members and went after anyone including Medical Doctors who had the temerity to say they could cure someone of illnesses that were making the AMA and its members and of course the Pharmaceutical industry a tidy profit.
Yes this was the world Scientology existed in.
