The special Hubbard Professional Auditors Course lecture series is unusual, possibly unique, in that Ron Hubbard's lecture series were usually aimed at highly qualified auditors, while congresses and other lecture series were given to a broad range of Scientologists and non-Scientologists. This series of lectures is aimed at people who are not auditors but are dedicated to taking training as auditors and gives them the basic data that they need. See the short excerpt at the beginning of Robin's review for what Ron says about the series. This is a write-up on lecture tapes/transcripts by Robin done 2017-07-21 for: SHPA, Special Hubbard Professional Auditors Course (London).

L. Ron Hubbard gave those lectures to students of an HCA/HPAAbbreviation for Hubbard Professional Auditor. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976). course in London. The first lecture was on April 6th 1959 and the closing lecture was on May 1st 1959. Usually Ron gave two lectures per day. The whole series contains 26 tapes and was published under the title "The Skills of a Theta1. theta is thought, life force, elan vital, the spirit, the soul, or any other of the numerous definitions it has had for some thousands of years. What Ron himself said about that course lectures, at the very end of lecture #13 (AXIOMS - SECOND LECTURE):

"You'll graduate from this course, by the way, having had a greater coverage of Scientology than has been given in any course including for nine years."

Ron's remark (see above) about the SHPA course lectures is not at all an exaggeration. Indeed, this lecture tapes cover everything a professional auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. Dn addresses the body. Thus Dn is used to knock out and erase illnesses, unwanted sensations, misemotion, somatics, pain, etc. Dn came before Scn. En passant Ron conveys deep philosophical insights into the relationships between man, the universes man is concerned with and the mechanisms inside man's mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE. This is what makes those tapes valuable even for those who feel no desire to become an auditor1. one who listens and computes; a Scn practitioner. 2. one who has been trained in the technology of Scn. An auditor applies standard technology to preclears. 3. a person who through church training becomes skilled in the successful application of Dn and Scn to his family, friends and the public to achieve the ability gained as stated on the Gradation Chart for his class of training...more.

Whatever ones attitudes toward the study of that lectures may be, it's strongly recommended to study the tapes in their consecutive order as they were given. The reason is, that the course is structured in a way that later lessons often build on earlier ones. If the student picks out tapes in random fashion he will be liable to skip a proper gradient.

The content of the lectures is not uniformly on same level. Occasionally the material is unnecessarily diluted with Ron's typical critical remarks against other practices, professions, philosophers, etc. No matter how right Ron may have been basically and how wrong everybody else was, the repetitions do not benefit anyone. They only slow the student down. Sure, a lesson held before a class is different than studying a transcript. Sure, Ron Hubbard was ahead of his time and did not receive the recognition he was perhaps longing for and which he certainly would have deserved. That's the typical fate of many geniuses. However, it would have been nice if Ron would have been more aware that those tapes were as well targeted at an audience being several decades into the future. That things have gradually changed to the better, last but not least through Ron's work, can be observed in parts of the society.

On which paths the data found its way into mankind's conciousness is not quite clear. Just recently a positive essay about Scientology applicable in contemporary psychology had been published and been approved by APA for psychologists ("COMMENTARY Common Sense Scientology" J. Wolfe 2016).

Scientology know-how apparently found entrance into corporate organization's management (e.g. Management by statistics and targets; employees appraisals, ethics1. The rules or standards governing the conduct of the members of a profession. (HCO PL 3 May 72). 2. A system of removing the counter-effort to the forward push. (6711C18SO) officers); in the field of medicine (e.g. "Do not talk in the presence of an unconscious person" is widely accepted now); abandonment of cruel methods in psychiatry.

So a couple of scenes have changed to the better since the time of those lectures. Most likely Scientologists all over the world have incubated fields of their profession with Hubbard's ideas without always calling it Scientology or Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma. The mental image pictures are believed on the basis of personal revelation to be comprising mental activity created and formed by the spirit, and not by the body or brain. (BPL 24 Sept 73 V) 2. Actually Ron must have already been aware of the changes in his time - perhaps they did not go fast enough or wide enough for his taste. However, he remarked: "By the way, the whole American medical profession has now accepted prenatal banks because of Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma. The mental image pictures are believed on the basis of personal revelation to be comprising mental activity created and formed by the spirit, and not by the body or brain. (BPL 24 Sept 73 V) 2. Another aspect is - and that's strange somehow, because Ron was not an unintelligent person - that Ron did not anticipate how the material might be received 10, 20, 50 or more years from when the lectures were first given. Times, circumstances, the sciences change. So the criticism may become outdated and not understandable any more. The essential data, to the contrary, will still be valid and real; timeless so to speak. It can already now be seen how things in psychiatry, psychology, the sciences have changed gradually to the better. It's unfortunate that Ron, at his time, was so much ahead of the time, that what he had to say could not yet be appreciated broadly.

To finish this, it can be said about that lectures: No matter what your casethe whole sum of past by-passed charge. The following is a write-up on each of the SHPA tapes. In most instances it contains mainly excerpts form the tape transcripts which the reviewer regards as characteristic for that particular lecture or of particular interest. The choice must, of course, be a subjective one.

Quotes are marked as such and put in quotation marks and inset. Text which is not in quotation marks is the reviewer's comment.

The reader must be aware that this is by no means meant as a substitute for studying the material in its entirety. Mind the fact, that the judgement upon which parts are important is a matter of the reviewer's opinion. Therefore this can never be a full substitute for the unabridged lessons. The sole purpose is, to give you an overview about what you can expect. Hopefully it stirs up your interest and curiosity - if it's not already there. It's certainly worth the time.

"... we, in training you in Scientology as a professional, have this in constantly. Our responsibility is to make sure that we teach you those things which work and to train you in such a way as to emphasize the importances that make certain things work so that you don't ever drift off into this attitude of "Nothing will happen, it doesn't matter what I do, so I no longer have to assume any type of vigorous, definite approach to the subject."

(UNIVERSES)

A lecture given on 7 April 1959

"You'll find in the Axioms a list of these that more or less have to be made in order to keep a that way. And the Axioms are simply the rules of the universe of the that makes it a ."

"You just remember that if he made the postulate, he made it according to certain rules and it comes apart according to certain rules and those rules are found in the Axioms."

"Now, what's the third universe? The second universe is the . Now, what's this third universe? Well, it's actually really a sort of a subdivision, a sort of a Q and A, rather than a real universe and - you could argue about this. But to most people it is a universe, so we include it in it. And we include a body."

"A body is apparently a universe. And it - a body plus its immediate possessions is just about as much universe as lots of people have. They've completely lost the second universe; they have no awareness at all of

the first universe and this leaves them with a body."

"A birth is not the source of a body, nor is sex the source of a body. It's merely the mechanics by which a body arrives. And I don't know that one can't just appear - unless somebody has made up a whole set of rules by which it must appear."

"Well, the rules by which it must appear are, more or less, the rules by which this universe lives. The rules by which a body must appear and the rules by which it must continue and the rules by which it must die are all a special set of rules."

(THE DYNAMICS)

A lecture given on 7 April 1959

"... let's take a look at these things called "."

Well, if you look them over you will find out that the dynamicsthere could be said to be eight urges (drives, impulses) in life. These we call dynamics. These are motives or motivations. We call them the eight dynamics. The first dynamic -is the urge toward existence as one’s self. Here we have individuality expressed fully. This can be called the self dynamic...more, as listed, give you subdivisions of functions and actions, rather than things.

So you'll just have to get used to the idea of the things - the targets - are four universes. And these are urges or impulses. They are actions, urges,

impulses which could be native to anything."

"You'll find in old Indian books - it said, "Things got very bad. The whole race went into a decline. Everything was upset. Man, in effect, had gone to hell. He had begun to eat. It was so bad that he had even ate other animals."

"Well, that to us today is almost a novel look. But if you look at it you'll find that - in general, that fifth is to a large degree a consumption thing now. Man is very interested in consuming the fifth so that he can go on surviving, which is about the silliest thing you've ever wanted to see."

The last third is quite interesting stuff about the inversions on the dynamicsthere could be said to be eight urges (drives, impulses) in life. These we call dynamics. (SCALES)

A lecture given on 8 April 1959

In regard of the content: The concept of simply "standing ones ground" in order to resolve another's effect is a sensible, realistic alternative to a) out-creating an opponent with a bigger effect of one's own creation (and later perhaps suffer from guilt) or b) to put up a complementary postulate to the opponent (which is in many practical cases only a pretence) with the consequence of suffering immediately. It makes understandable the critical remarking of those who said, that Ron was a "confronter". Sure he was. The critics apparently neither could confront that, nor much else.

But there is still a much higher concept for resolving a problema problem is postulate-counter-postulate, terminal-counter-terminal, force-counter-force. It’s one thing versus another thing. You’ve got two forces or two ideas which are interlocked of comparable magnitude and the thing stops right there. All right, now with these two things one stuck against the other you get a sort of a timelessness, it floats in time. (SH Spec 82, 6111C21) 2 . a problem is a postulate-counter-postulate resulting in indecision. That is the first manifestation of problems, and the first consequence of a problem is indecision. (SH Spec 27, 6107C11) 3 . a multiple confusion. (SH Spec 26X, 6107C03) 4 . an intention counter-intention that worries the preclear. (HCOB 23 Feb 61) 5 . a problem is the conflict arising from two opposing intentions. A present time problem is one that exists in present time, in a real universe. (HCOB 3 Jul 59) 6 . something which is persisting, the as-is-ness of which cannot be attained easily. (PRO 16, 5408CM20) or conflict: The ability of a being to exert pan-determinism. Something Ron goes in depth in one of the following lectures.

(Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) - the whole behavior of the pc. You understand? They're very important. That's how you evaluate success - the emotional tones and changes. And they change in just that order, not some other order.
All right, so let's get on to this Effect Scale. This is a way of gauging the ARC1. a word from the initial letters of Affinity, Reality, Communication which together equate to Understanding. It is pronounced by stating its letters, A-R- C. To Scientologists it has come to mean good feeling, love or friendliness, such as “He was in ARC with his friend.” One does not, however, fall out of ARC, he has an ARC break. (LRH Def. Notes)...more scale - its gauging the pc and measuring how much effect you're having on the pc. But when you start to measure how much effect you'd have on the pc let's not you make the mistake of being yourself upside down on the Effect Scale. The only people who never produce any results in auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) are haywire, upset, all out of gear, mishmashed on the Effect Scale.
What is the Effect Scale? Very handy scale. At the top of the scale, the individual can receive or give, or not receive or not give an effect, at will. So it's an effect. Now, as we go down scale, the individual becomes more and more anxious about producing an effect, and more and more leery of receiving one."

(STATES OF BEING)

A lecture given on 8 April 1959

Content:

Ron describes a scale of processing goals. On the lowest stage the body is addressed in terms of healing bodily ailments - like what a physician does. Above that processing is more and more targeting the of the . This is related to various states of being - e.g. release, -Clear *), Theta-, .

*) In the part about the state of "MEST1. a coined word, meaning matter, energy, space and time, the physical universe. All physical phenomena may be considered as energy operating in space and time. The movement of matter or energy in time is the measure of space. All things are mest except theta. (Abil 114-A)...More-Clear3. a Clear is not an all-knowing being. A Clear is somebody who has lost the mass, energy, space and time connected with the thing called mind . Further Ron talks about a scale of difficulties to be resolved in processing. The last difficulty to surrender is communication1. the consideration and action of impelling an impulse or particle from source point across a distance to receipt point with the intention of bringing into being at the receipt point a duplication and understanding of that which emanated from the source point. (HCOB 5 Apr 73)...more difficulties, followed form, which is next most difficult. Next to that is germs. Constant conditions are even easier to resolve (e.g. with an Locational Process). Chronic difficulties rank amongst the easier targets. Aches and pains are the easiest targets.

This here is an interesting statement for MEST1. a coined word, meaning matter, energy, space and time, the physical universe. All physical phenomena may be considered as energy operating in space and time. The movement of matter or energy in time is the measure of space. All things are mest except theta. (Abil 114-A)...More-clears:

"All right. Nevertheless, that has to be - because it is and because it can be created in a finite number of hours - is the first grade of . This state can be obtained. E-Meters don't work on them until they key themselves back in again with and so forth. And they measure up in various ways. Their intelligence is terrific. Now, these, by the way, are fairly terrific people. They do all right. I'm not downgrading the people who reach this state. I'm just showing you it's not stable."

A process:

"Get the idea of mocking up some money. Now get the idea that would spoil the game and don't do it."

"All right. Get the idea of mocking up a picture as large as that wall and as brilliant as present time. You got that idea? Good. Now get the idea it'd spoil the game if you did it, and don't do it."

The goal of that course:

"And the goal of Clear is terrifically valid to go for. And that's what we're going to teach you to do in this course."

(ANATOMY)

A lecture given on 9 April 1959

Content:
The lecture again starts with a show off of Ron's typical vanity. Well, all right, let him have his thing. We're more than generously compensated from the first quarter onwards. It gets really interesting when he talks about
a) how and what the meter2. Hubbard Electrometer. An electronic instrument for measuring mental state and change of state in individuals, as an aid to precision and speed in auditing. The E-meter is not intended or effective for the diagnosis, treatment or prevention of any disease. (Scn AD)...more registers, b) the fact that mental mass, energy, space and time is the same as physical universe MEST1. a coined word, meaning matter, energy, space and time, the physical universe. All physical phenomena may be considered as energy operating in space and time. The movement of matter or energy in time is the measure of space. All things are mest except theta. (Abil 114-A)...More. And this goes on when it comes to the anatomy of the mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE.
This can lead to many good cognitions while the dots get connected and loose ends come together.
Postulates, circuits and misownership are added.
Ron is in his element and crystal clear. Pieces come together. One gets a glimpse at the big picture. Not that you can as-is the mind3. a network of communications and pictures, energies and masses, which are brought into being by the activities of the thetan versus the physical universe or other thetans. The mind is a communication and control system between the thetan and his environment. (FOT, p. 56)...MORE afterwards. But perhaps the possibility becomes pleasantly real.

Hypnotism and irresponsibility explained. Another gem of data.

The differences and definitions of lock, dub-in, mock-up, secondary, engram1. a mental image picture which is a recording of a time of physical pain and unconsciousness. It must by definition have impact or injury as part of its content. (HCOB 23 Apr 69) 2. a specialized kind of facsimile. This differs from other mental pictures because it contains, as part of its content, unconsciousness and physical pain. (Dn 55!, p. 12) 3. a complete recording, down to the last accurate detail, of every perception present in a moment of partial or full unconsciousness. (Scn 0-8, p. 11)...more explained.

This is a most interesting datum:

"You can put a person's time track back together again, that has become scrambled, and you can do a tremendous amount for him. You could just sit there with an E-Meter, take experiences that he can see - you know, in terms of locks, secondaries, engrams - and just find each one in time for him. And gradually get his time track lined up and he would be in much better shape. That all by itself."
