The original edition of the book included an introduction by J. A. Winter, M.D., who became the first medical director of the Hubbard Dianetic Research FoundationAn evening, part-time organization. It's hours are 6:00 P.M. to 11:00 P.M., Monday through Friday and 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 P.M. Saturday and Sunday. (Modern Management Technology Defined (C) 1976),[39] an appendix on "The Philosophic Method" by Will Durant (reprinted from The Story of Philosophy, 1926), another on "The Scientific Method" by John W Campbell and a third appendix by Donald H. Rogers.

These contributions are omitted from editions of Dianetics1. DIA (Greek) through, NOUS (Greek) mind, deals with a system of mental image pictures in relation to psychic (spiritual) trauma.
