It should be noted that the copyright disclaimer of 2007 version shows years 1952, 1988, and 2007. What happened to 1961 and 1968 editions of the book, and why the 1952 edition was supposedly used in making improvements to the 2007 edition when Ron Hubbard had already made improvements in later editions under his own name?

1952 edition of the book was not available for this review and was found to be unnecessary since 1952 edition should have never been referred to in compiling 2007 edition in the first place, if indeed it was.

1968 edition was written with proper English (British) spelling of the words which is assumed to have been the case for 1952 edition as well. Many of the words with British spelling were changed into American spelling (example: “travelling” to “traveling,” “centre” to “center” or “labour” to “labor”) which in itself is a gross alteration of the original presentation of material.

In this book Ron Hubbard gives many tips to auditors in terms of handling the incidents in auditing. There are a number of places where he emphasizes the use of Scientology 8-8008 in auditing. There are no references to Scientology 8-8008 in 2007 edition (see examples below).

[Here again a full sentence was added referencing Technique 80 and Symbological Processing. So psychotics are processed in the same way as more normal people? Doesn't it seem a bit too high of a gradient? Let's see. Go toward the end of this chapter – pages 32 and 33 in 2007 version. The information here has not changed from the 1968 edition where it says:

“For every motivator in the present life there is an overt or a ded. Thus it behooves the auditor to pay much more attention to using TECHNIQUE 80* than it does to find new and strange present life incidents to audit. It should not require more than a score of hours to clean up the present life until heavy incidents in the past can be audited: this is true for the neurotic and relatively sane only, it is not true for the psychotics: for them it may be necessary to audit prenatals or use other techniques and to spend perhaps hundreds of hours of ARC processing to make them entirely sane and stable.”

So here Ron actually separates out the psychotics and says that for them other techniques may be necessary along with ARC processing which actually makes sense. He never mentions “Symbological Processing” here.]

Note! The above list is by far not a list of all the differences that can be found in comparing the two books which also include breaking down or combining paragraphs, changing original punctuation, and other alterations. Also, the two sections appended at the end of 2007 (“A Step-by-Step Breakdown of 88” and “Additional Incidents on the Theta Line”) were not in 1968 publication. If Ron Hubbard wanted it included in “A History of Man” book, wouldn't he do that in 1968 publication?
Comparing 1968 edition (12th printing – 1976) copyrighted under L. Ron Hubbard to 2007 edition copyrighted under “L. Ron Hubbard Library.”

The second edition – 1961 – was also available for this review and was found to be basically the same as 1976 printing used in this report.

The very first – 1952 – edition of the book became available for this review and will be referred to throughout this report.

The first edition (1988) copyrighted under "L. Ron Hubbard Library" was also available [ISBN: 0-88404-306-1].

Unlike Fundamentals of Thought and many other basic books, A History of Man was mainly meant for auditors and was initially released as a limited manuscript titled WHAT TO AUDIT. All the previous editions had a disclaimer on the first page stating this fact. The 2007 edition is missing this disclaimer.

Science of Survival - Alterations

Unlike “Fundamentals of Thought” and some other basic books, “A History of Man” was mainly meant for auditors and was initially released as a limited manuscript titled “WHAT TO AUDIT.” The original book has a disclaimer on the first page stating this fact. The 2007 edition, as with many other things, is missing this disclaimer.

Note! Bold formatting in citations was added to highlight key areas of alteration. Square brackets - [ ] - are used to insert notes where needed. Note, chapters did not have titles in 1968 edition.

ALTERATIONS RELATING TO "SCIENTOLOGY 8-8008"

1968: CHAPTER ONE (beginning of chapter) 2007: Chapter One “How and What to Audit” (beginning of chapter)
There are two general problems in processing preclears. The first is HOW to auditThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975), the second is WHAT to auditThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975). The present volume presupposes that the skill necessary to the first problema problem is postulate-counter-postulate, terminal-counter-terminal, force-counter-force. It’s one thing versus another thing. You’ve got two forces or two ideas which are interlocked of comparable magnitude and the thing stops right there. All right, now with these two things one stuck against the other you get a sort of a timelessness, it floats in time. (SH Spec 82, 6111C21) 2 . a problem is a postulate-counter-postulate resulting in indecision. That is the first manifestation of problems, and the first consequence of a problem is indecision. (SH Spec 27, 6107C11) 3 . a multiple confusion. (SH Spec 26X, 6107C03) 4 . an intention counter-intention that worries the preclear. (HCOB 23 Feb 61) 5 . a problem is the conflict arising from two opposing intentions. A present time problem is one that exists in present time, in a real universe. (HCOB 3 Jul 59) 6 . something which is persisting, the as-is-ness of which cannot be attained easily. (PRO 16, 5408CM20) has been mastered*: and there is good reason whyThat basic outness found which will lead to a recovery of stats. 1968: CHAPTER ONE (end of chapter) 2007: Chapter One “How and What to Audit” (end of chapter)
Studying these incidents may be discovered to be restimulative to the student. If so, he would find auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) them as restimulative. However, such restimulation is very easily resolved and, unless he feels close to the end of tolerance, he should not be shy of auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) or studying the track.

In SCIENTOLOGY 8-8008, we have seen that creative processing is far superior to any other type of processing. Creative processing does not address the facsimiles1. any mental picture, that is unknowingly created and part of the time track is a facsimile, whether an engram, secondary, lock or pleasure moment. For instance, people who wear thick horn-rimmed glasses and are thin are generally in the monitor valence of FAC 1 and will flip into the incident with great suddenness if it is even closely approached; as FAC 1 accounts for Tuberculosis in most cases, it will be seen, then, that this creative processing of whole-track incidents is of considerable value. Studying these incidents may be discovered to be restimulative to the student. If so, he would find auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) them as restimulative. However, such restimulation is very easily resolved and unless he feels close to the end of tolerance, he should not be shy of auditingThe application of Scientology processes and procedures to someone by a trained auditor. (Dianetics & Scientology Technical Dictionary (C) 1975) or studying the track.
